WELCOME BACK KATE - Wed. 24 September

On Wednesday 24 September 40 members heard from Kate Leeming about her extraordinary 149-day cycling odyssey through Central Asia between March and September this year. Kate's journey took her and her team through six countries - all the 'Stans', including Afghanistan. She cycled 9,000 kilometres (9,001 actually) and - along the way - passed 100,000 kilometres on her many and varied long-distance cycling journeys on all the world's continents over the last 30 years.

Kate showed attendees many extraordinary slides of her Asian adventure, including the tragic shrinking of the Aral Sea and its flotilla of abandoned, rusting boats, the hardy lives of the inhabitants of the regions she visited, the many kindnesses she received en route, and the vast and unrelenting topography she passed through. At the end of her journey she trekked up the Chelab Stream to determine the true source of the Oxus (Amu Darya) River, so adding an important piece of knowledge to world geography.
